The incident involving the Russian LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz—which, struck by a Ukrainian drone, is now drifting uncontrollably near our coasts with a cargo of liquefied natural gas with a thermal potential equivalent to that of 50 Hiroshima bombs—is emblematic of the situation Italy finds itself in between two wars—one in Europe and the other in the Middle East—both caused by the same power politics implemented by the United States and its allies.
WWF reports that it is closely monitoring the Russian methane tanker Arctic Metagaz, adrift in the Strait of Sicily, following a series of explosions that occurred between March 3 and 4. The ship, unmanned and out of control, is carrying an extremely dangerous cargo of approximately 900 tons of diesel fuel and over 60,000 tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG). A potential leak, WWF warns, could cause fires, lethal cryogenic clouds, and widespread and long-lasting pollution of water and the atmosphere. The environmental risk is very high and potentially irreversible, with serious repercussions on the economies of the Pelagie Islands, which rely on fishing and tourism. The gravity of the situation is confirmed by the fact that Italy, France, and seven other countries have called for prompt intervention by the European Commission.
What caused this disaster? Alfredo Mantovano, Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, declared in an interview that it was an "accident involving the Russian ship." The government is thus attempting to conceal the true cause: as we reported in Grandangolo on March 6 and as photos of the wreck show, the Russian ship Arctic Metagaz was struck by a Ukrainian naval drone launched from Libya. This is a genuine act of international terrorism that exposes Italy and other European countries—the same ones arming and financing Ukraine for its war against Russia—to grave risks: the ship's thermal capacity, which could end up on our shores, is equivalent to that of nearly 50 Hiroshima bombs, excluding radioactivity. The story of this veritable time bomb, drifting uncontrollably in the Mediterranean near our shores, is emblematic of the situation Italy finds itself in, between two wars—one in Europe and the other in the Middle East—both caused by the same power politics implemented by the United States and its allies. Not only do these wars expose us to the growing risk of nuclear war, but they also have a growing impact on our living conditions. The war against Russia and now against Iran are causing a dramatic increase in energy prices with serious economic and social consequences. The Israeli attack on Iran's South Pars gas field, the largest in the world, and Iran's subsequent retaliation have sent oil and gas prices skyrocketing.
Italy, which is already de facto participating in the war against Russia despite officially denying it, is now also participating in the war against Iran, again under US command. Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton drones of the United States Navy regularly take off from the Sigonella Naval Air Station (Sicily) for operations in the Persian Gulf against Iran. Italian forces are deployed in Kuwait alongside US forces, with MQ-9 Reaper drones (one of which was destroyed in an Iranian attack) and Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. At the same time, an Italian Navy guided-missile frigate, the Federico Martinengo, is part of the naval battle group accompanying the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which is also deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean for the war against Iran.
