At the risk of appearing to be a shill, I think it is safe to say that China arguably has the best mobile phone service in the world, certainly second to none, while the US and Canada have arguably the worst, surely the most fragmented and dysfunctional, and certainly the most expensive. Let's look at some details.

 

I'm uncertain about the US but, so far as I am aware, in Canada and many European countries, mobile phones can be purchased only from a telecom company, one of the more clever but clearly anti-social provisions in Western communications legislation. This gives the phone companies a truly 'captive market' in that, if you want a particular phone, you have no choice but to submit to all that company's policies and to pay their demanded prices. A major difference in the communications landscape is that Chinese phone companies do not have a monopoly on the sale of mobile phones and are in fact minority sellers.

First, let’s dispel the combined notion that China spies on everyone and the US spies on no one. There is so much public evidence to destroy both these assertions that I won’t bother repeating them here. I will however remind readers that a few years ago China more or less banned Windows 8 from the country because it was discovered that the O/S had a built-in NSA back door.[1] It seems that Germany reported on this first, but the devastating proof was at an IT conference where a Microsoft executive was interrupted during a speech with precisely this accusation.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] He did not deny it because the person making the accusation was the person who discovered it and had with him the proof, but refused to discuss it and changed the subject.

But this is hardly news. Forty years ago it was proven that all Xerox copy machines delivered to foreign embassies and consulates in the US were “espionage-ready”.[10][11] Also, for at least 20 years, and perhaps much more, it was common knowledge that when any foreign embassies, consulates, banks and other corporations ordered computers and similar hardware from US suppliers, those shipments were intercepted by UPS, delivered to the CIA and/or NSA for installation of “extra” hardware and software before delivery to their destinations. This was one of the confirmations by Edward Snowden.[12][13][14][15] Any search on this will give you millions of hits unless Google chooses that moment to lose its memory.

In the latest sign that the US’s extensive lobbying campaign to convince its Western allies that Chinese telecoms giant Huawei is not to be trusted is beginning to bear fruit, Huawei on Saturday revealed that it had fired an executive based in Poland after he and a Polish national were arrested by Polish intelligence and charged with espionage on behalf of Beijing.

Already, members of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance – which, in addition to the US, includes Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK – have tightened restrictions on use of Huawei equipment by government agencies, and have discouraged domestic telecoms companies from utilizing Huawei’s market-leading 5G technology. Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and other Western countries are taking similar steps. President Trump is weighing an outright ban on purchases of Huawei products by US companies as US telecoms firms struggle to catch up in the race to become the world leader in 5G technology.

And though Huawei operates in more than 170 countries globally (including Syria and Iran), it appears that the fear of being excluded from Western markets has prompted a rare break with Beijing, which said on Friday that the arrest of Wang Weijing was “gravely concerning” – words seemingly intended to menace any Polish businessmen or diplomats living or working in the PRC (just look at Beijing’s treatment of Canadian nationals following the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou).

In a statement quoted by Bloomberg announcing the firing, Huawei denounced Wang as having brought “disrepute” on his now-former employer.

Washington has asked Ottawa to arrest Meng Wanzhou and to extradite her. This young woman is the financial director and daughter of the founder of Huawei, the Chinese Telecom Giant. She was arrested on 6 December in Canada.

The motive for the war undertaken by Washington against Huawei is deep-rooted and spurious are the justifications.

The heart of the problem is that the Chinese firm uses a system of encryption that prevents the NSA from intercepting its communications. A number of governments and secret services in the non-Western world have begun to equip themselves exclusively with Huawei materials, and are doing so to protect the confidentiality of their communications.

The covers/excuses for this war are theft of intellectual property or in the alternative, trade with Iran and North Korea, and violating rules of competition by benefitting from national subsidies.

The Five Eyes is a system of electronic espionage by Australia, Canada, the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. They have begun to exclude Huawei from their auctions.
