With only one year left until the end of Vladimir Putin's third presidential term, Sputnik sat down with a number of Russian political analysts to talk about the Russian president's major achievements throughout his latest presidency and his possible steps in the year to come.

The third presidential term of the Russian leader will be remembered for his successes in the foreign policy arena and for a number of unsolved issues in the country's domestic issues, namely in its economy, Russian political analysts told Sputnik.
Among President Putin's major achievements, they noted the breakdown of the US monopoly to interpret international law at its own discretion.
In addition, they said that the Russian leader is now perceived around the world as a value-oriented politician from the conservative wing.

However they added that the successes in his foreign policy have complicated the implementation of his electoral economic agenda.
The President, they suggested, will use his remaining year in office to work out a coordinated socio-economic program, facilitate the development of the Russian regions and to further rotate high-ranking personnel.
Nikolai Mironov, the Director of the Center for Economic and Political Reform points out the evident geopolitical emphasis of Putin's third presidential term. He also singled out some the key accomplishments as well as some complications of the president's foreign policy.
"The reunification with Crimea, the re-tuning of Russia's foreign policy, attempts to find new partners are among the achievements. Quite complicated relations with the West and the US have forced the president to re-orient his policy towards the eastern partners," he told Sputnik.
"The ongoing Ukrainian conflict and attempts to establish peace in the area portray the president as a peacemaker and as a person who tries to defuse these conflicts while advancing national interests," he said.
Russian political analyst Dmitry Badovsky of the Moscow-based Institute of Socio-Economic and Political Studies Foundation also called the reunification with Crimea a "conceptual and emotional keynote" of the president's third term.

After 3 Years of Hostility, Hysteria & Tears Russia Still #1 Investor in Ukraine

Three years after anti-Russian politicians took power in Kiev, Russian money continues to help support Ukraine's economy. According to figures compiled by the Ukrainian State Statistics Service, Russian investment in Ukraine reached $1.67 billion US in 2016; that is 38% of all foreign investment in Ukraine, and more than that of any other country.

Over three years ago, amid the euphoria that followed the Maidan coup d'etat, Ukraine's new authorities promised that billions of dollars' worth of investment would soon flood into the country from Kiev's new allies in the EU and the US. Three years on, statistics confirm that these hopes have failed to materialize.
According to the latest foreign trade figures from Ukraine's State Statistics Service, Russian businesses invested $1.67 billion into the Ukrainian economy in 2016, which is 38% of total investment. Taken together, EU countries invested slightly more — $1.9 billion. Individually, however, none of them managed to come anywhere Russia's total.
Cyprus businessmen, for example, invested $427.7 million into Ukraine; investors from the UK provided $403.9 million; Dutch business contributed $255 million, and Austrian investors provided $249.9 million.
These figures are negligible, economists say, when accounting for the fact that many of these countries – the UK for example, have trillions of dollars-worth of investments in countries around the world.
Furthermore, the tiny island nation of Cyprus is known as a major offshore tax haven for Ukrainian and Russian capital. The Netherlands, the UK and Austria are also known for having favorable tax conditions, making it likely that at least some of the funds listed as coming from Cyprus or Europe are actually Ukrainian oligarchs' capital being pumped back into Ukraine.

Strong Neighbors, Strong Nation: The Real Reason for Putin's Central Asian Tour

This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a visit to Central Asia, meeting with officials in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Kremlin has also announced plans for the president to visit Turkmenistan in the near future. Geopolitical analyst Rostislav Ischenko explains what's really behind Putin's diplomatic blitz tour of the region.

On Sunday Putin arrived in the southern Kazakh city of Almaty for an informal meeting with Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev. The next day, the two leaders held an official meeting, after which Putin boarded his plane and flew on to Tajikistan, where he met with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe. Putin wrapped up his trip by meeting with Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambayev in Bishkek on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, the Kremlin confirmed that Putin also had held joint telephone talks with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov with Tajik President Rahmon during his visit to Tajikistan. The Turkmen leader extended an invitation for Putin to visit Ashgabat, and the Russian President assured Berdimuhamedov that he would take him up on the offer "in the foreseeable future."
What was the purpose of Putin's whirlwind diplomatic trip? As geopolitical analyst and Eurasia expert Rostislav Ischenko pointed out, Central Asia has been a consistent priority region for Moscow throughout the Russian President's tenure. "Just last year," he recalled, "Putin paid two visits to Uzbekistan, two visits to Kazakhstan, and received the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in Moscow. That's not even counting the meetings [with Central Asian leaders] in multilateral formats."
Interestingly, however, news reports on the actual content of this week's talks have been scarce, limited mostly to messages of protocol. No long-awaited bilateral documents were signed, leading to intrigue over the real purpose of Putin's trip. Nevertheless, Ischenko emphasized that even the dry official reports do offer details of some of the important issues which were raised in negotiations. These, he noted, can be chalked down to two basic issues: the economy and security.

RÉSEAU VOLTAIRE -- Letter by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Donald Trump

Letter by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Donald Trump

To: His Excellency, Mr. Donald John Trump
The president of the United States of America
      Greetings,
Your Excellency has been elected, in the recent US election, as the president of the country.
It can be inferred from the political and media atmosphere in the US that the result of the election has been despite the status quo, and beyond the will and prediction of the governing body and the main system behind the scene of the US political stage.
The stances of the rival party and some of your party members and most western leaders suggest the same notion. Irrespective of whether or not that is true, the recent election revealed part of the actual and accumulated demands of the US people.
Welcoming this and hoping it will have an effect, I hereby share some points with you, whereas I’d tried in the past to convey some important matters to the two preceding presidents, via letters.

      A. Introduction

1- This letter is by no means political, in the common sense of the world; nonetheless, today it is from a human to another human. The letter is from a humane standpoint, rooted in interest toward and compassion for the American nation and other nations, and I expect your Excellency to read it from the same perspective, adopting a humane approach.
2- I speak as the son of the great, civilizing and culture-making nation of Iran. A nation with a prominent role in the global culture and civilization, by having presented thousands of scientists and artists, as well as innumerous scientific and cultural achievements throughout its honorable history.
A nation that, back 2500 years ago, by its great historical character, Cyrus, issued the order for freedom of thought and equality of human beings, as well as for annulling slavery, racial discrimination and exploitation; principles it has ever since adhered to.

       | PARIS (FRANCE)
Note du Réseau Voltaire : Lafarge-Holcim répond ici à l’enquête diligentée contre lui à Paris.

      Distinguished Mr. President,
      Distinguished colleagues,
I am pleased to have the opportunity to address such a representative audience. The fact that high ranking officials of Member States as well as of non-Members consider it to be an honor to speak at the Conference on Disarmament (CD) proves the authority, relevance and promising future of this forum when it comes to strengthening and improving the international legal framework that the system of global strategic stability and international security is built upon. There is no doubt that each State wishes to be heard. Each member of international community is seeking to ensure its national security interests are firmly secured and do not slide into dependency on instant political considerations. In our view it gives a special value to the CD, where all participants can hold an insightful dialogue on equal terms dealing with the most sensitive security issues and seek solutions to complex problems of arms control, disarmament and WMD non-proliferation.
We are all here united by the noble goal to ensure global and regional security and stability in a sustainable way. We are positive that elaborating efficient and viable instruments of arms control under the aegis of the United Nations, as well as strengthening the existing regimes of WMD non-proliferation contributes to achieving this goal.
